I recently visited some family members and it reminded me how detrimental our environment can be to us. As soon as I walked into the house I felt sick. Similar to that feeling you get when you walk into a hospital, a funeral home or a nursing home. That heavy dirty air, slimy all over feeling. Don't get me wrong, their house is perfectly fine as far as cleanliness. It is just the atmosphere.
This is a household with a lot of negativity. The individuals live in a world where "everything happens to them". They always focus on what others have done, what they don't have, and on how things affect them. Everything is a catastrophe. The sky is always falling. And to top it all off, there is a lot of yelling. Part of the yelling is due to one individual who is deaf and refuses to use a hearing aid, but still. All of this makes for a very unhappy and unpleasant place to be. Every time I enter this house I feel like I am suffocating.
Would it surprise you if I said everyone who spends anytime significant amount of time in this house gets sick? The two individuals in this house are constantly suffering from skin issues, headaches, various aches, anxiety, depression, stomach ailments and a variety of other issues.
I grew up in this house, yes these are my parents. As a child, I too suffered from the above issues. Since I have left and lived on my own, these issues have cleared up. But, every time I walk through the door, the problems come back. Amazing!
Our mental status and the environment and people around us can have an impact on our health. Persistent and consistent negativity causes our bodies to produce increased adrenalin, cortisol and prostaglandins. These hormones greatly affect our health. They cause a suppressed immune system, increased weight, altered moods, etc, etc. In the short term. a wide variety of annoying symptoms can occur. In the long term, a wide variety of diseases that will greatly affect your lifespan can occur.
So, what can one do? STOP BEING NEGATIVE! Not only will your health improve, but so will your life. So, while I am visiting my family, I get adjusted more frequently, get plenty of exercise, try to eat healthy, and try to see the lighter side of life.
